Atmos Energy notified the City of Dallas that the company has completed the replacement of all cast iron pipes in the Dallas natural gas pipeline.

Importance: For many years, federal regulators have been warning of the dangers of cast iron gas pipelines. As we age, cast iron is more prone to explosions.

Background: In February 2015, Dallas had 456 miles of cast iron pipelines, more than any other city in Texas.

Flashback: In 2018, a house with cast iron pipes exploded in northwest Dallas, killing a 12-year-old girl. Two other houses in the neighborhood caught fire or exploded in the same week.

What they are saying: "By working with our state regulators and local governments, we continue to make major improvements to our infrastructure," Atmos senior vice president Jeffrey Knights wrote in a letter to city leaders.
