The two companies plan to build a paint and coating shop at ACIPCO's ductile-iron pipe plant in North Birmingham. ACIPCO's underground water pipes are coated with an epoxy Bessemer-based Vulcan Painters will apply on-site, the board said in a statement.

The project's investment is pegged at $5.5 million, the board said, and qualifies for abatement of sales, use and ad valorem taxes. ACIPCO is one the nation's three largest ductile-iron pipe makers; all are based in Birmingham. The company has been in business since 1905 and employs 3,000 people, according to the 2009 Alabama Manufacturers Register.

"When we were first approached by ACIPCO for support, we immediately began to evaluate how the city could participate," Birmingham Mayor

said in a statement. "This company has a strong legacy in our city and we are happy to invest in businesses that invest in its people and products because as they grow, we grow."
